A contractor’s answers to pertinent questions will give you a sense of whether or not you could comfortably work with that individual and their ability to do the job. Depending upon the scope and size of your project, choose the questions that are relevant and important to you in order to make an informed decision. Remember, your goal is to find the best match and candidate for your project.

How long have you been a contractor?

Look for a company with an established business history in your community. Surviving in any business in today’s competitive marketplace is a difficult task. Most successful contractors are proud of their history in the industry.

Are you state and county licensed?

Make sure to see the contractor’s current license and make sure it is for your state. You can verify the contractor’s license number and expiration date with your local jurisdiction, such as the California (CSLB) Contractors State License Board. The CSLB’s website is http://www.cslb.ca.gov/Contractors/ and the telephone #: is (800) 321-CSLB (2752)

Will my project require a permit?

All cities and counties in California require permits for building projects of this magnitude. Failure to obtain the necessary permits or to arrange obligatory inspections can be illegal. A qualified contractor will be conscious of the permit process, and ensure that all permits have been obtained before initiating any work.

Have you completed projects like mine?

This will let you know if the contractor is familiar with the type of project that you are looking to have done.

Can you provide a list of references?

The contractor should be able to supply you with a list of references, including their contact information. Check references and visit some ongoing or finished projects.

What is the time frame for starting the project?

This is the time to ask questions about the work schedule. Ask when they can start the project and estimate for completion. A good answer should factor in the schedules of everyone involved and consider the time it takes to order and receive materials. Manufacturers’ schedules must also be considered.

How is your operation managed?

Find out who will be your contact person. Ask if the contractor have employees and/or hire subcontractors. You should know what parts of your project will be handled by staff, and which will be contracted out to independent contractors.

Does your company carry workers compensation and liability insurance?

Obtain copies of the insurance certificates to verify coverage and make sure that it is current. It is vital to do business with a licensed contractor. If you do not, you can be liable for damages and/or injuries that happen in your project site.
